History
The City of Campeche is a Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Campeche was founded on October 4th, 1540 as The Villa of San Francisco of Campeche, by Francisco de Montejo el Mozo. It was considered as the only populated harbor, with easy inland access, Campeche was the start point to the expansion towards Yucatan.
Due to its richness and international trade with Europe, Campeche was invaded several times by pirates which led it to ask for assistance from the Royal Spanish Crown to build a defense system.

It is important to take the streetcar to visit the museums and fortresses, as well as some of the traditional neighborhoods like San Roman, Guadalupe and San Francisco.
The State features 18 archeological sites where the Maya civilization can be admired. The outstanding sites are Calakmul, also Cultural Heritage of Humanity and one of the most important and biggest Reserves from Mexico. Other unique archeological sites include Edzna, Becan, El Tigre, Xpujil, Hormiguero and Jaina.
In the north of Campeche you can be seduced by the magic of its dances and traditions in places such as Tenabo, Calkini, Hecelchackan, where you can admire the knitting of jipi hats in the humid caves set up as handicraft factories.
In Hopelchen nature can be enjoyed in the amazing routs of Xtamcumbilxuna`an, recently restored.
